Blast From the Past: Hard Candy

hard candy nail polishRemember these? Hard Candy nail polish used to reign supreme in the high-end nail polish market, with a bottle retailing for something like $12, $14.

Now they cost $7, and only because they’re “vintage.” Yes, at 10 years of age, you’re considered an old fogy in the beauty world.

Regular Hard Candy nail polish is on sale at their website for $5. A great deal for us, but part of me aches for the Hard Candy empire and how far it has fallen. But that’s probably just me, getting all sentimental and nostalgic for what used to be. Sigh.

Did any of you own a bottle of Hard Candy back in the day? I never did. My lack of a job in high school meant I had to stick to the drugstore stuff.

I’ve never even heard of it before :-) hehe

Oh my gosh - maybe this is a true indicator of how far the brand has fallen. Or it could be it’s not available in Australia?

If it makes you feel any better, Hard Candy is owned by Urban Decay. Urban Decay is the older teens and up brand, whereas Hard Candy is being marketed now more towards early teens and preteens. So the lowering in price is probably more because $12 or $14 per bottle would be too much for their target audience.

How interesting! The price change makes sense now. Smart of them to change their marketing tactic since the blue nail look which they built their company on has already seen its hey day. Though, as we know with the cyclical nature of fashion, I’m sure it’ll be back.

Another related beauty factoid: the creator of Hard Candy, Dineh Mohajer, recently launched a new cosmetics line called Goldie. Wonder why they sold off Hard Candy in the first place?

I swear, I think I paid $17 (!!!!) for a bottle of Urban Decay Mildew in the 12th grade. *sigh* I felt so cool.

Oooh, Urban Decay. They were another big one back in the day. Although I recently had the pleasure of trying one of their deluxe eyeshadows and am happy to say that they have definitely not been booted out of the game. Can’t wait to try out more of their products.

being that dena ma-whatchamacallit (pronounced ma-ha-jeur) is from michigan and went to the private school down the road from my high school, i was hard candy obsessed from the moment she sold the stuff to the boutique where i was working. my sister and i must have had half of the collection between us. get this…we even wore the rings to school! i still have crusty bottles store away at my parents house. oh the glory days of “trailer trash” (cement grey). i hope dena makes a come back. hard candy was seriously ingenious.

  8. Christina Says:

You wore the rings?! They look like the only finger they’d fit on is the pinky!

Wasn’t “trailer trash” Gwyneth Paltrow’s favorite color? I seem to remember reading that in Seventeen or something. Heh.

  9. Adrina Says:

Certain drastic fall in price! I doubt how much it will make its product stick to the same quality.

  10. Christina Says:

Hi Adrina! To be honest, I don’t remember the quality being that great in the first place. But then again, I was just using the testers in the department store, and the quality there is always really dodgy.
