Review: Urban Decay Deluxe Eyeshadows

I’ve been meaning to write about the Urban Decay Deluxe Eyeshadows for a while. After testing them out at Ulta and reading reviews at The Makeup Bag and Product Girl, I finally snatched one up for myself.

So the Urban Decay Deluxe Eyeshadows are in a word: amazing.

I’ve always been a big believer in color. A splash of hue does wonders for my mood and outlook. Call me easy to please, but anything bright is enough to momentarily distract me from the pain and sorrow of - amongst other tragedies in life - bad hair and a closet full of nothing to wear.

Since I just can’t resist, here they are! Feel free to take a moment to ooh and aah (grin).

Aren’t they absolutely lovely?? (I think someone at Urban Decay Corporate has just rolled over in her grave because I used the word “lovely” to describe an Urban Decay product. Haha.)

I purchased this eyeshadow in Adore, which is the blue pictured at the top left. I’ve been using it to try to replicate this season’s edgy look that Beauty Addict advised us of not too long ago. It’s been doing me right so far (and way better than my previous attempts). The blue adds the perfect zing to my eyes without making me look like a space cadet. It makes my deep brown eyes really pop.

Interestingly enough, I’ve been using the product as an eyeliner rather than an eyeshadow. I take an angled makeup brush and dampen it with water. Then I dab it in the product and carefully draw a line along my upper and lower lash line.

Having done this a few times already, I have officially been converted to using wet eyeshadow to line my eyes rather than an eyeliner pencil. I have yet to find a pencil that doesn’t smear and give me the most horrible raccoon eyes. But wet eyeshadow? Now that goes the distance with no smearing whatsoever by the end of the day. A miracle if ever I saw one!

So please, for your own good, run out and check out these eyeshadows, ok? The pigment is rich and concentrated, and the color is budge-proof. And the packaging is so so so cool. What more can you ask for?

    no photos?!?!?

Of me? I’ve tried, but it never shows up in the pictures. Maybe I’ll try pounding more product on, so that when it translates into photograph, it’ll look like what it looks like on me in real life.

    Phew. Did that make sense?

Oh I love that blue! And you’re so right about wet eyeshadow being far superior to eyeliner pencils. My whole life changed when I started doing that; when I used pencils I always ended up looking like my high school spanish teacher who had her squiggly line of eyeliner a full centimeter above her lashline. As a blonde, the brush and eyeshadow method lets me really jam the color into my damn blonde lash roots too. I think you have me convinced of an Urban Decay purchase soon. How much are they?

  4. Christina Says:

Hey Winona! They’re not cheap - $17. But I think it’s worth it if you have some extra splurge money.

And if it’s any consolation, your $17 would go towards a little mirror inside the compact (which a lot of eyeshadows don’t have).

I should also mention that I bought mine with a $5 Ulta coupon that I found in some fashion magazine, so it was somewhat cheaper.

The green looks wicked. Witchypoo green perhaps?

These are so funky. I wish I could justify having all of them so I could just look at the fun containers in my makeup bag :)

I love using shadow as a liner, but I’ve also been dying to try Too Faced’s Liquif-Eye - it’s a… well, the description says:
Magically transform your favorite eye shadow into a waterproof, smudge-proof liquid liner with this unique, clear liquid and built-in felt tip precision eyeliner brush

I really would love to try this - I adore those teeny, tiny liquid eyeliner brushes. They’re so much fun to play with!

  8. Christina Says:

I took a look at that Too Faced Liquif-Eye at Sephora, and it seems like the much cheaper option would be to take an existing makeup brush that you own and just add water to create a wet eyeshadow. It’s cute, but it seems like an unnecessary expense. Plus - how do you wash out the brush between uses?

Then again, I guess we wouldn’t be here if we weren’t all into spending copious amounts of money trying out all the newest and latest beauty products on the market! Haha

[…] Urban Decay Deluxe Eyeshadow - I’d sort of written off Urban Decay as a cosmetic has-been, a remnant of the mid-90s grunge era, until I came across these babies.  I’m a sucker for bright eye colors, probably because I love color.  And between my dark hair and my dark eyes, a splash of hue around the eyes always feel unexpected, slightly edgy - which I love.  These shadows are magnificently pigmented, and come in the boldest, most beautiful colors I’ve seen.  For those days when you don’t want to feel like a wallflower.
