Hair Care Dare - Update #1
Here is my first update from the Hair Care Dare, for those of you anxiously awaiting.
So I washed my hair this morning as specified in the instructions. I used four generous dollops of Pantene conditioner. (Somehow using a fifth dollop felt a bit unbearable. I was already nervous enough!)
I was terrified I was going to end up with a greasy glop of hair the rest of the day. But miracle of miracles!!! My hair actually felt clean when was I done! And it’s felt clean all day! It’s also felt very thick (thicker than usual), and not heavy or weighed down as I was afraid of.
Anyway, this is just day 1, so keep your fingers crossed for me. Tomorrow when I wake up could be a whole ‘nother scenario altogether.
And by the way, which one of you chick(en)s is going to do this challenge with me and Liz? Huh??

wow that sounds so amazing!! i also have a really oily scalp but haven’t tried anything like this.. so you don’t wash your hair with shampoo before slathering on all the conditioner? and your scalp didn’t look greasy at all afterwards?

Yeah - that’s the plan. Amazingly enough. And my hair actually felt clean afterwards! You should get in on the challenge, and see if it works for you!

I have been blessed with straight and normaler and any normal hair Asian hair. It seems that everyone needs a “trim” every 3 months or 10 weeks, but for me, that “trim” is when my hair is too smooth and I just want to color it, cut it, perm it, or do something to make it a little fuzzy. I’m not a hair person and will never be one. The only updo I can do is a pony tail. So yeah, blessed, but I’m bored.
So I’ll take one this challenge to see if my hair will gain some bounce and body. I have A LOT of hair, so in the hot days of NYC, it feels like I have a wig on everyday. It’s almost impossible to give my hair body unless I blow dry, because the sheer weight of it is like 10lbs.
A few days ago, I bought the Herbal Essence Degunkify shampoo and conditioner (maybe a different name for the conditioner). I got amazing result. The shampoo’s got menthol in it, so it’s tingly cool when you wash your hair. The conditioner is very light weight, but at the same time moisterizing. I will try to use it with just the light weight conditioner tonight and see what happens.
I’m scared! It’s so hot in NYC, I don’t know if I can bare a day of oily scalp.

I like to wash my hair at night so I can let it airdry, and so of course we had thunderstorms all last night. With all that moisture in the air, my hair was still a little damp when I woke up. (15 minutes late. No time to blow dry the rest of the way dry…) So the jury’s still out. There’s no telling what might have happened if I’d had time for anything more than brushing my hair back into a ponytail.
I’m trying again tonight, because I did have that nice clean feeling when I rinsed last night. In fact, my hair felt a little softer and smoother than usual. There’s also the fact that I’m terrible at following directions, and I bungled a few steps on the first try. The most important one is probably giving yourself a full 5 minutes of rinsing time. Either way, I’m really excited to try again. Maybe I’m just psyching myself out, but I think I’ve got fewer flyaways, despite the crazy humidity. Best of all, the thing I was most afraid of (crazy scalp reaction) didn’t happen! Yay!
Heads-up Stephanie! Double check the ingredients on the Herbal Essences. “Drama clean” was one of the conditioners I looked at while I was picking up White Rain, and they break one of the rules: no ingredients ending in “-cone”.

Stephanie - thanks for joining the challenge!! If your hair gets really oily/gross, try putting on a scarf headband. That’s what I use to hide greasy hair if I’m ever in a pinch and can’t wash.
Liz - thanks for the update. Keep at it!!

[…] The consistency was thin and runny and it worked amazingly well! I think it worked better than the Pantene from before, which ended up coating my hair too much and making it too greasy the second day. In fact, my hair looked pretty good on Thursday, the next day. […]

[…] So my final thoughts? (Updates One, Two, Three and Four can be found in previous posts.) Conditioner-only to wash my hair definitely cleansed it, and I might put the method to use in the winter since my skin tends to get drier then. But in the summer, it’s just too hot and damp outside. I found that while my hair was ok on the second day after my “wash,” it still felt heavier and greasier than it should. Not a ton heavier or greasier, but just enough that I felt uneasy about it. […]
