Hair Care Dare - Update#2

Following up again on the Hair Care Dare. So Monday, the day of my “washing” — magical. Day 2, Tuesday — not so magical.

Before the challenge, I washed my hair (with shampoo) every other day, and oftentimes, my hair looked freshly washed even on the second day. (It took me six months to train it, but I finally did!) Not so yesterday. Yesterday, it looked like I could harvest some Crisco off my scalp.

It could be that my hair needs to get adjusted to this new routine, so I’m going to stick it out. Anyway, I plan to “wash” my hair again, but this time, I am not going to use as much conditioner on and near my scalp as I did on Monday. Instead, I’ll concentrate it on the ends.

How is everyone else doing?

Last night, when I had a handful of the Drama Clean Conditioner on my palm, I closed my eyes and took a deep breathe and pressed the conditioner into my scalp and almost screamed “I JUST PUT CONDITIONER ON MY SCALP!!!” It felt… weird…

For the next 15 minutes, I kept on thinking how gross it is and how I want to kick myself for taking on this challenge. My scalp usually itches like mad when I have oily scalp. Well, I did have to scratch once or twice in the shower. then after I came out of the shower, it didin’t feel any different than any other shower. Hair was nice and soft. I think it could be the fact that I rinsed about 10 minutes with freezing cold water.

As part of my abusive routine to my hair, I went to sleep with wet hair like every other night. However, this morning, my hair felt extra soft and silk (like when I did a hot steam hair mask). I like it. My hair smells so good, I think the conditioner made the fregence stay longer.

It’s almost 10:30 and raining cats and dogs in NYC. We’ll see how my hair goes until tonight and see if I can stand another shampoo-less shower (highly doubt it though, I have a steam yoga session today, can you imagine the grease on my scalp after all that sweat, yuck!)

    Good luck.

Sunday: “Washed” with VO5 Champagne Kiss .89 cent conditioner.
Monday: Hair was shiny, felt thick, looked a little flat.
Tuesday: Hair still feels great but is looking dull (probably from products). Used hot rollers on top for volume. Holding OK.
Will continue with another “washing” tonight. Not giving up until a couple of weeks of this, so I’ll post again.

I’m still clean, and I’ve actually got my first measurable result: I’ve always had thin/fine hair, and have just accepted breakage as my lot in life. Last night on the shower wall (I know, it’s gross, but sticking hairs that come loose during washing on the wall is the only way to keep them from going down the drain) I saw half as much as usual. I’m also getting less flaking and itching from my scalp.

I’m sorry you’re getting greasy! Is there a chance your conditioner has a “-cone” ingredient in it? I don’t know what it does, I just know that I’m scared of it (and that Pantene, the conditioner pictured in your last article, has Dimethicone in it). Have you tried pseudo-lathering? I’ve been putting a ton of conditioner on my scalp and then carefully working it in. I know I’ve got plenty of dead scalp to get rid of, so once I have enough conditioner I scrub with my fingers like I do when I shampoo; takes a lot of conditioner, but I need it. The lathering works the conditioner into a consistency that reminds me of mousse. I thought it would cause tons of breakage, but it seems to be having the opposite effect. (Knock wood.)

Yup. The Drama Clean Conditioner from Herbal Essence has that Dimentcone thing in it. That could be it.

Stephanie - I just went for a run at the gym, and did the conditioner wash nonetheless. And my hair is feeling good! You should try it after yoga today.

Terri - thanks for joining the challenge. I had the same results where my hair felt thick, but I’m guessing that’s because we bulked it up by coating it in conditioner.

Liz - I’ve tried lathering, but it doesn’t seem to create anything near the mousse consistency that you’re describing. I’m going to check on the -cone thing…

Back atcha Christina - the trick of ‘lathering’ is a ridiculous amount of conditioner; I tend to load most of the conditioner up top, and start working it into my scalp first. Then once I can move my fingers through the hair at my scalp freely (I don’t feel any tugging), I start working the leftover conditioner through the rest of my hair.
